DESCRIPTION:Joint meeting with the Silver Study Society — \n  \n  \nPresented by Dr. Christopher Maxwell\, Curator of Applied Arts of Europe\, Art Institute of Chicago.  Mr. Maxwell will highlight objects from the newly designed Eloise W. Martin Galleries for the Applied Arts of Europe that opened on July 11\, 2025. The elegant space presents more than 300 objects from the Art Institute’s distinguished collections of furniture\, silver\, ceramics\, and glass made between 1600 and 1900. The expanded presentation will allow 40% more objects to be on view than our previously installed galleries\, and offer visitors a deeper and more nuanced exploration of European design during a period of extraordinary transformation. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:China Painting Redeemed: Florence Pratt Steward and Chicago's Atlan Ceramic Art Club
DESCRIPTION:In February 1893\, Florence Pratt Steward organized 15 of Chicago’s most talented female china decorators to create an exhibition of their work in the Woman’s Building at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Calling themselves the Atlan Ceramic Art Club\, they made a creditable showing\, winning 18 medals\, more than any other club in the country. \nThe Atlan’s goal was to develop a style of ceramic decoration that would be “original” and “distinctly American.” Toward this end\, members adopted “conventional” decoration—the stylization and original configuration of plants and other motifs drawn from nature—as the only acceptable style for their work. It soon became the club’s trademark \nSharon S. Darling is the author of numerous essays and publications on Chicago creativity. While curator of decorative and industrial arts at the Chicago History Museum\, 1972–1986\, she produced a series of award-winning exhibitions and publications on Chicago metalwork\, ceramics\, glass\, and furniture. She served as director of Motorola Inc.’s corporate museum\, 1986–2007. Since then\, she has contributed essays on Arts and Crafts jewelry and decorative arts made in Chicago and Illinois for various exhibition catalogues and publications. Her 2024 book\, Women\, Enterprise\, Craft: Chicago’s Atlan Ceramic Art Club\, 1893–1923\, received the Decorative Arts Society’s Charles F. Montgomery Prize. Darling is a graduate of North Carolina State University\, Duke University\, and Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Ceramic Highlights from the Bayou Bend Collection
DESCRIPTION:Bayou Bend\, the house museum for the Museum of Fine Arts Houston collection of early American decorative arts and paintings\, is the former home of Houston philanthropist and collector Ima Hogg. During her lifetime (1882–1975)\, she assembled one of the most important collections of 17th-\, 18th-\, and 19th-century American decorative and fine arts anywhere. More than 2\,500 objects are on display in 28 room settings and galleries. The collection comprises objects made or used in the United States between 1620 and 1876\, including furniture\, paintings\, sculpture\, prints\, ceramics\, glass\, metals\, and textiles. \nBradley Brooks is a specialist in historic house museums with a background in American decorative arts.  He came to Bayou Bend in 2015 from the Indianapolis Museum of Art\, where he served as founding curator for two historic house museums\, Oldfields\, the J. K. Lilly\, Jr. residence\, and for Eero Saarinen’s Miller House.  He also served as assistant curator of American decorative arts. \nPreviously\, he was director of the McFaddin-Ward House in Beaumont\, Texas; and founding curator\, then director\, of the Moody Mansion in Galveston. He earned a B.A. in communication arts from Elizabethtown College\, and an M.A. in early American culture from the Winterthur Program of the University of Delaware. \nRemi Dyll is the collection manager for the Bayou Bend Collection\, where she has worked since 2008. She specializes in object research\, with particular interests in ceramics\, glass\, and needlework. Her work focuses on advancing digital accessibility and supporting collaborative scholarly projects. She serves on the Charles F. Montgomery Prize and Award Committee of the Decorative Arts Society and is a member of the board of the American Ceramic Circle. A Houston native\, Remi previously worked as an editorial assistant at The Magazine Antiques. She holds a B.A. from Southwestern University in Georgetown\, Texas\, and an M.A. from the Bard Graduate Center in New York City. \nIma Hogg Ceramic Circle Annual Luncheon
